Mr Goldie Khera
Consultant Bariatric Surgeon, Founder and Clinical Director of Brighton Bariatrics
Mr Khera will usually be the first person you meet when starting your weight loss journey, to discuss your suitability for weight loss surgery. He is also the person who will perform your surgery and support you with your aftercare.
Goldie has trained a highly skilled pre-assessment, theatre and post operation ward team of health professionals at the Spire Montefiore Hospital who will look after you and help you with your weight loss journey with a bespoke, personalised and caring ethos. After personally performing your surgery, Goldie will see you daily during your admission and coordinate your safe and speedy discharge process. We will liaise closely with your GP in this process before and after surgery.
Mr Khera has over 20 years’ experience within the NHS and has been a consultant surgeon in Brighton since 2012. Originally from Birmingham, Goldie graduated from Liverpool University in 1998 not only with a medical degree (MBChB) but also with a BSc (Hons) in Physiology. He has extensive experience in keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery and has trained in Mersey, London, Newcastle, Hong Kong and Australia. He is a past recipient of 1 of only 2 national Bariatric Ethicon Fellowships in 2011 as a post CCT fellow in North Tyneside. Mr Khera founded Brighton Bariatrics in 2014 with his team of local Brighton Bariatric specialists!
Mr Khera also has a keen interest in surgical training and education and was elected in 2011 as the President of the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT). He has published his clinical research extensively and presented original data nationally and internationally. He is currently surgical module leader and Honorary Clinical Senior lecturer as well as Deputy Director of assessment at BSMS (Brighton and Sussex Medical School). He is also a Honorary Clinical Senior lecturer at Imperial College London.
Dr Pete Westhead
Consultant Anaesthetist and Bariatric specialist
Dr Westhead is our dedicated anaesthetist for your surgery. He is part of the team who will discuss your eligibility for surgery and may sometimes speak to you prior to surgery date. He will see you on the morning of your planned operation and explain the anaesthetic procedure, answer any questions and discuss pain relief options. He will be available for the onsite medical and nursing team to contact during your stay and will see you on a daily basis postoperatively.
Dr Westhead is a consultant anaesthetist at The Montefiore Hospital and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and has been a Brighton Bariatrics anaesthetist since 2015. He has a wide range of experience in anaesthetics from bariatric anaesthesia to major trauma and prehospital care. He graduated from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in 2001 and received postgraduate training at St George’s Hospital, The Royal Brompton and The Royal London Hospital. He continues to work with South East Coast Ambulance service and The Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance.
Ms Caroline Laidlaw
Dietitian
Caroline’s role is pivotal in the service from initial assessment through to regular nutritional counselling and education for patients undergoing gastric sleeve, band revision or gastric balloons. She fully assesses patients to ensure individualised nutritional adequacy to improve their diets, health to maximise their weight loss. Her goal is to improve patient outcomes and weight loss targets through practical support and recommendations.
Caroline is the Specialist Dietitian with over 10 years’ experience in bariatrics. Caroline qualified from Kings College London and has subsequently gained a wealth of dietetic knowledge, with over 30 years of practice in the NHS in London, Newcastle and Brighton and has over 18 years’ experience in Private practice in the local area. Areas of special interest including bariatrics and weight management, gastroenterology, oncology and mental health. Caroline is a member of the British Dietetic Association and is fully registered with the Health Professional Council.
Ms Jenny Radcliffe
Psychologist
Jenny is part of the multidisciplinary team, with her focus is on identifying emotional and behavioural issues that could impact on the success of surgery. She sees all patients before surgery, supporting them in becoming more aware of their relationship with food. Active preparation for surgery by making psychological and lifestyle changes puts you in the best position to achieve better health and emotional wellbeing.
Jenny has worked as a clinical health psychologist in the NHS and private sector for over 25 years. She has specialised in the area of bariatric surgery and in 2013 her book “Cut Down to Size: achieving success with weight loss surgery” was shortlisted in the BMA book awards self-help category. This book covers everything you need to know about bariatric surgery, from referral, through to the challenges you may face after surgery. This book offers insight into the realities of living with weight loss surgery, and practical exercises help you think through your emotional readiness, social circumstances and eating habits that could determine the success of surgery.
Ms Sarah Roche
Bariatric Specialist Nurse
Sarah has extensive experience within Bariatrics and is there to help and guide our Brighton Bariatrics patients before and after their surgeries. She is kind as well as resourceful and will support you through your weight loss journey with a bespoke patient centred ethos.
